"Starting Anew" by Vancouver artist Nicole Sleeth.
Noticing - it's something Vancouver artist and instructor Nicole Sleeth excels at. As a painter, she uses oil to create rich images in a style known as realism. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Nicole at her studio space to photograph selections of her recent work. Entering the space, meeting the artist within, catching a glimpse of the environment in which she does what she loves - I was instantly charmed. Nicole's studio has an inviting, old industrial feel with large, oversized windows letting in ample natural light. While the light was lovely, we found ourselves blocking the windows to prevent glare. Working together we repositioned the paintings several times, using the interplay of dark and light, along with 20 second exposures, to capture what I hope are realistic representations of Nicole's work (read: doing justice to the depth and beauty of each piece!).
